APU EXPANDS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME ACROSS ANAMBRA EAST LGA

The Aguowulu Progressive Union (APU) of Nigeria yesterday marked a significant milestone in its commitment to academic excellence and community upliftment by unveiling its expanded 2025 scholarship programme. For the first time, the scholarship, which focuses on first-year students in higher institutions, will now cover all communities across the entire Anambra East Local Government Area.

The unveiling ceremony was graced by top government functionaries and traditional rulers, emphasizing the programme's importance to the state's educational vision.

APU was founded in 2009, APU, whose name "Aguowulu" is said to embody perseverance and discernment, began its educational support initiatives in 2013, initially restricting its scholarship to its home community of Aguleri-Otu.

“In the past years, we limited our scholarship programme to Aguleri-Otu, because charity begins at home,” APU Chairman stated at the event. “Today, we expanded our scope and widen our horizons to cover the entire communities in Anambra East LGA.”

The 2025 programme specifically targets first-year students who have gained admission into high institutions and meet the set criteria across all communities in Anambra East, which includes towns like Aguleri, Igbariam, Nando, Nsugbe, Umueri, Umuoba Anam, among others. The Union also highlighted a preliminary effort, noting they "started from registering 2025 JAMB for over 30 students across all the communities in Anambra East."

APU has consistently championed the cause of education, maintaining that it is "the surest and shortest route to greatness." The union aims "to correct the mantra that 'Education is not a SCAM, rather it's the shortest bridge to which a poor man's child can associate with rich man's child'."

The expanded programme aligns with the vision of the Anambra State Government. “We are proud to contribute to Governor Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR vision of educational reform across our great state,” the union added.

The APU Chairman, Comrade Nwobu Dominic on behalf of the Union promised that the kind gesture will soon be extended across Anambra North and beyond.

Beyond scholarships, the APU has provided steady support to orphanages, the sick, indigent students, and the elderly since 2013, fulfilling its mission to be a "beacon of hope" and cultivate good citizenship.

A high point of the event was the recognition of Master Madubuko Obumneme Clinton, who was issued a Certificate of Excellence by the Aguowulu Progressive Union of Nigeria. In a further show of support for academic achievement, the Hon. Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Anambra State, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, presented the student with a cash award of N250,000.

The event saw a significant attendance of influential figures,

  1.  Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, Hon. Commissioner for Education, Anambra State.
  2.  Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka Mmelikam, Hon. Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Anambra State (who is also a foundation member of APU).
  3.  The Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC) Anambra State.
  4.  The Chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB).
  5.  Traditional Rulers and Presidents-General (PGs) from across Anambra East.

The Aguowulu Progressive Union is looking forward to the commencement of the 2025 academic session to formally award the scholarships and continue its mission of educational and community development.
